On The Makings and Un-Makings of Self and Unself

Architecture as a pathway to make and un-make ourselves, our sorroundings, our future. I had never before been drawn towards the study of architecture. Sure, I've always admired beautiful architectural constructions around the world. But it wasn't until I started questioning my surroundings from a design point of view, that I started thinking about the purpose of all that composed it. I started becoming interested in cities, in public spaces, and in the people that inhabited them. What about a city made me drawn to it? What made me feel happy? What made me feel free?

I am the place where I am. 

The concept of "freedom" is no simple thing. But it is something I've been searching for as long as I can remember. I was first introduced to the academic concepts of "freedoms" and "unfreedoms" at a graduate Design Thinking Course taught at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. It was nice to finally be able to put a name to my ideas. 


For me, the City of Freedom is the place where you can go out at any time of the night and not feel alone, or un-safe, or without something to do. It is the place where you are most "at home". At the end, the "free city" will always be the one where I can get together with friends at the end of a party night to dream about our next project. A utopic reality.
